Great Games, but...

Review Date: March 10, 2010
Reviewer: Nerdy Birdie,
Metal Gear Solid is a great game, and the 3 pack is a great price. However, the first metal gear is for PS1. Therefore, if you have a PS2 you will have to buy a memory card for PS1 in order to save the game. And Sony no longer makes them.
Great Game

These games are great, I know because I have played them all many times before. Only problem is I am waiting for a NSTC Playstation because we have PAL is australia. Postage was extremely fast too!
This is Essential.

Reviewer: Jacob Nickel,
The other reviews cover the major points of how the games have a most inventive control scheme, with the second and third games including both third and first person viewpoints. Since I owned Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3, I always wanted the rest of the saga so far. I'm happy to say that even though the first game is more than ten years old, the gameplay was varied and fun, and the storyline was thrilling, with the other two games improving in gameplay and graphics. The third game, Substance, is lacking the second disc, but all that disc included was an online portion of the game that can no longer be played, and a secret theater full of funny parodies. That secret theater can be viewed via youtube quite easily, so don't fret. I was happy to find out that all three games work great on any backward compatible PS3. If you have a PS3 and plan on or already have played MGS4, then you need this collection. Or if you're planning on getting Metal Gear Solid Rising on PS3 or Xbox 360, and happen to have a PS2 or backward compatible PS3, you'll definately want this. IT IS ESSENTIAL!

This game was very good. If you want to pay the 1st mgs games this is great, it also has a lot of extras. It came very fast, faster than they said it would. It was in the condition they said it was, new. I would order from them again.

The first three Medal Gear Solid game are still a blast to play. The learning curve is not to steep.
Misleading information on the site

Review Date: February 2, 2010
Reviewer: Dale M. Coy,
The site lists this item as including the Substance and Subsistance packages for MGS 2 and 3, but it infact does NOT.

Games are great, but false advertising is not.
Amazing games, amazing deal, but w/ some flaws

This essentials collection without a doubt is a true bargain for $24.75(after they've charged you $4.75 shipping#. You receive: Metal Gear Solid#PS1#; Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance#PS2#; and Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence#PS2#, but I admit that it does come with notable flaws.

1# For the Metal Gear Solid#PS1# you cannot save any of your game progress whatsoever onto your PS2 memory card. You can only save onto a PS1 memory card or a PS3 hard drive, and this is a true letdown as this collection was aimed mainly at a PS2 audience and could not be fixed.

2) The original Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence came with two discs. The first disc had the actual game, along with some new camoflauge patterns and a newly improved camera angle. The second disc included an online mode#which is no longer supported as Konami shut down the servers in April 2007#, a movie theater where you could view all of the game cutscenes seperately, and a few other features that I cannot recall right now. Now the PROBLEM is that in the collection version, you ONLY receive disc 1. The most likely explination for this is, due to the previoulsy stated fact, that online is no longer supported by Konami. Even without the online I still would have liked to have received disc 2. I think Konami was just flat out lazy for not being able to just give us disc 2 with the online feature completely removed.

3) A very minor flaw, for me at least, was the box art for each of the game cases. To me they seem very plain , and I would have much rather preferred the original box art for each game. Again, a VERY unimportant flaw, but sort of a let down to any strict clollectors out there, and me.

The first two points truly are the only major vices that this collection has#along with the 3rd minor one). But still, for a grand total of $24.75, this collection was definately worth the purchase, considering that most new PS2 games cost $20 each these days, and that you receive what are some true masterpeices in PS2 and PS1 gaming still available today. This set is also a very affordable way for any gamers new to the series to learn up on the plotline going into Metal Gear Solid 4#PS3).

Great game except you will have problems playing the second half of the first game (Metal Gear Solid I) on some versions of PS II. It may work ok on PS III, but is meant for PS I.

This is by far a great collection to have if the opportunity was missed to pickup individual copies of each game. It is now in one bundle! How can that be beaten? Gameplay is not that different from when it first came out. This is a must have for a Metal Gear fan! Especially, this is a prequel to the PS3 Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots.
nice bundle a couple of issues

the first game of the tree does not recognize the PS2 8MB memory card so i can not save the game.
the other two games work fine.
i like the fact that the game has training sections so you can learn how to play without having to figure out everything yourself, i dont like games that assume you will figure out somehow. to be old games the graphics are not that bad.
overall it's a classic game so if you like this type of games you should enjoy it.
Best Deal!

An unbelievable deal, MGS3 Subsistence is worth this price alone and comes with MGS2 Substance including the first one for PS1. Only thing that bothered me is that Duel Mode is not in MGS3 nor is Ape Escape did not care for that anyways, the Movie Theater is on the first disk in case you want to watch previous scenes but Secret Theater which are parodies is not although you can just watch those on youtube if need be. And in MGS1 Meryl's Codec is in the booklet.

Great package that contains the whole series stories with the directors cut of the 2nd and 3rd games. Since the first game is very hard to find 10 dollars for it is an amazing price for a new copy. If you have the original games and not the "Substance" and "Subsistence" versions of the 2nd and 3rd games, then this is still very worth the price you will pay. This is one of the best exclusive series to the PlayStation brand and is worth every penny if you enjoy a good story and exciting action gameplay. If you are not playing this game on a PS3 you will need a PS1 memory card either for your PS2 or PS1 for Metal Gear Solid. The game won't save onto a PS2 memory card. Obviously you will also need a controller and a PS2 memory card if you are playing on the PS2 system.
Fantastic, Must Have for Fans New and Old Alike

Reviewer: Dakota Dugger,
Okay The only complaint I have about this collection is not having the disc 2 for Subsistance but that can easily be remedied by buying the original game (which I already have) That being said, This collection is fantastic I love Metal Gear Solid and bought this just after getting Metal Gear Solid 4 just so I could revisit all of the games.

If you liked any Metal Gear or just want to fill in the blanks in the story before playing MGS 4 This is a definate must buy!!!
The definitive, must-have Metal Gear collection

I can't say much that has not been said already -- this is a must-have for Metal Gear fans, period. Read other reviews to understand carefully that Metal Gear Solid 1 is a PS (PlayStation, One) disc. The others are PS2 discs.

If your a fan of the Hideo Kajima series then this is a must have item, not only is it at a good price but also a great deal. You get not one but the three originals in the metal gear solid series which is great for those who love the story line and want to own the entire collection. Each is just like the originals of the games nothing excluded, the only thing I think they could do to improve this set is by adding the forth and final installment to Solid Snakes story games other than that it's just about perfect.
A must before MGS4

I owned a Playstation when I was a kid but never got into the MGS series. I just recently got a PS2 for real cheap and picked up a bunch of stuff that I never got around to, this included. This has to be one of the best purchases I've made in a long time and I plan to keep it forever!
Just buy it

Reviewer: H. Fox,
If you're missing the PS1 Metal Gear game or have the original releases of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, nab this just for the updated versions. The MGS2 game disc is a DVD-rom, which is kind of tempermental in PS2s, so make sure to clean the lense good with nail polish remover and a q-tip (dab the lense with the wet end and then dry it), and it'll work great. Make sure you have a PS1 memory card to save your MGS1 game saves. Only drawback is that the MGS3 update had two discs and the second disc had Metal Gear 1 and 2 on it, but this edition lacks this second disc.

I just have a question,if this collection include "Metal Gear Outer Heaven" and "Metal Gear Shadow Moses" or not?In my memory, the "Metal Gear solid 3 substance"have 2 discs and one of that embody the two games I mentioned above.

You can't beat the price of this deal. The first 3 metal gear games in one package. A must for any fan of the game.
Amazon's info is misleading.

Overall, these are still three great games at a good price.

However, don't be fooled when it says you get MGS3:Subsistence on Amazon's page. This does not mean that you get the whole set (including copies of Metal Gear and MG2: Solid Snake). These are not included in the package, the way they would be with the normal Subsistence pack. For me, this dishonesty (on Amazon's part, not Konami's) ruined the whole buying experience for me and I'm probably just going to sell this pack off to a friend or something.

Boo on Amazon for ruining what was going to be a good time by misleading me with their description on this site..
Baffling but enjoyable

Reviewer: Josh Bubbles,
In terms of value, you cannot beat the Metal Gear solid 3-pack that included Metal Gear Solid 1 for the Playstation 1 and Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 (the "Special Editions" of each, which are very much worth calling "special" - the MGS3 included here is phenominal and far better than the original release) for the Playstation 2. The first game gave me about eight hours of fun, the second ten, and the third twelve.

The games themselves are layered, filled with drama, humor, and some of the craziest, zaniest characters and scripts this side of comic books. There's a lot of movie watching in these games, but they're fun as hell to enjoy. The gameplay is plentiful in every game and, while not as crazy as the game's premises, quite pleasurable and smooth. It's also enjoyable to see how the series evolved over the years.

If you have a Playstation 2, you have no reason not to own this pack.

For the price at the time (Approx $30 US) it was an excellent buy. These are great games, in my opinion... This set is slightly unusual in that the games themselves appear slightly different from the standalone store-bought versions... however I cannot seem to put my finger on why... Although I know they are titled differently (Namely 'SUBSISTENCE')
Phenomenal Game Series

Game Over - Snake? Snake!?!? SNAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!

Reviewer: Dylan Ladd,
This package is worth having just to get the first Metal Gear Solid game for the PS1, that game in this day in age is hard to find unless you somehow manage to find one at a pawn shop...

Snake vs. Monkey (Ape Escape spoof with Snake) doesn't come with this package, unless you do care, you might want to hold on to your Snake Eater copy of Metal Gear Solid 3.

Buy this! You won't be disappointed.
Great set, great price!!!

First of all, I'm not a kid - I'm 19 years old.

I'm relatively new to the Metal Gear fanbase. A friend of mine bought MGS2 and 3 a few months ago and I watched her play. I was immediately sucked into the storyline and soon enough I was playing them myself, even though FPS is not my usual genre. I got both MGS2:Substance and 3(original) used at GameStop for $[...]. Since finishing them, I've wanted to play MGS1 but I wanted it cheap and in good condition.

I was hesitant to get the Essential collection because I already had Substance and the Subsistence in this set didn't have the extras I wanted (namely the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2). I managed to snag this set for $[...], which I consider to be a much better deal considering I already had part of the set.

I haven't played them yet, but the packaging is very attractive and I can display my MGS collection with pride (no used price stickers!!!).
